Efforts are being made to re-introduce the teaching of Classics languages Latin and Greek into British schools. The idea is that people with proficiency in those languages become better at English, have a better understanding of Western history and find other, modern, languages easier to learn.
Alongside the languages themselves is an encouragement to develop an interest in the civilisations and cultures that used them – and which created the foundations for the bulk of western society. The interest was boosted by a series of TV programmes from the BBC towards the end of 2010 that concentrated on Ancient history and is continually being helped by lessons about the Roman occupation of much of Britain 2,000 years ago.
Charity offers financial help
An organisation called Friends of Classics has been campaigning for a study of Latin and Greek to be re-introduced into the state education sector for many years and has been awarding grants to help teach the classics. Last year it, along with classics teachers and a number of UK public figures, launched Classics for All as a much larger charity aimed at raising funds to back classics teaching in state schools.
