Chicago is a city steeped in architectural history. The birthplace of modern American architecture and the home of the skyscraper is unsurprisingly packed full of historical, and modern, buildings of interest. The majority of these spectacular buildings are confined to the relatively compact ‘loop’ area.
Slicing through this historic downtown the Chicago River flows into Lake Michigan. Acting in the same way as the Thames in London, or the Seine in Paris, this river creates a natural undeveloped corridor through the dense urban fabric, opening up the city. This allows for long vistas and unobstructed views of some of the city’s greatest monuments. Many of these buildings were designed with the river in mind, to take advantage of this open space, and are thus best viewed from on the Chicago River.
